If you have a chip in your windscreen now is the time to get it repaired. Did you know that about one-third of your car’s structural stability is provided by the windscreen? Windscreens do more than protect you from wind and rain they are also responsible for airbag deployment in a collision and protection in case of a roll-over.

Chipped windscreens are more likely to crack at freezing, up to 60% higher, than any other time of the year. And as the temperature drops the chance of the windscreen cracking because of chip increases, 80% percent more likely than in the warmer months.

Sudden and severe temperature changes causes stress to car glass. Glass that is already stressed by temperature changes can chip or crack simply from scrapping ice and snow off of the windscreen.

The best way to prevent further damage to your windscreen is to get chips repaired as soon as possible after they happen. The repair process is usually quick – about 30 minutes. 2. Next the technician will clean the chip to remove moisture and dirt from the damaged area. Moisture or dirt sealed into the repair will cause the spot repair to look cloudy and possibly obstruct the sight of the driver. This is one of the reason it is best to repair chips as soon as possible to prevent the build-up of dirt.
  3. A special resin material is place in the chip and any excess is removed to maintain the smooth surface of the windscreen. The resin is hardened using an ultraviolet light when dry the resin becomes clear and blends in with the glass.
